Searching DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals)

Best for: Finding finalized, peer-reviewed journal articles, empirical data, and published case studies.

1.Access and Filter by Material: Step 1.

Go to doaj.org. (See button bellow this guide). On the homepage search bar, toggle the button from Journals to Articles. This ensures you are searching for individual papers rather than entire magazines or journals.

2.Use Specific Business Phrases: Step 2.

Avoid typing long questions like “How do small businesses handle change management?” Instead, use targeted keywords or put exact phrases in quotation marks.

  • Example: Type "change management" AND "SME" or "intellectual capital" AND performance.

3.Apply Sidebar Filters: Step 3.

Once your search results load, look at the left-hand sidebar to narrow your scope:

  • Languages: Filter to English (or your preferred language).

  • Subjects: Drill down into Social Sciences -> Business or Economic theory.

  • Year of Publication: Filter to the last 3–5 years if you need current market insights.

4.Locate the Full Text: Step 4.

When you find a relevant article, click the “Full Text” link (usually highlighted in green or blue). This will redirect you straight to the publisher’s open-access page where you can read or download the complete PDF.

SSRN (Social Science Research Network)

Best for: Finding early-stage research, working papers, highly specific economic data, and cutting-edge corporate strategy papers before they hit traditional textbooks.

1.Navigate to SSRN Search: Step 1.

Go to ssrn.com (See button bellow this guide) and click on the Search tab at the top. (Note: You do not need a paid account to search or download open-access papers, though creating a free account lets you save searches).

2.Target Your Search Fields: Step 2.

SSRN is massive. To avoid being flooded with irrelevant papers, use the dropdown menu next to the search bar to change your search from All Fields to Title or Abstract. If a paper mentions your keyword in the abstract, it’s highly likely to be central to your topic.

3.Sort by Practical Relevance: Step 3.

On the results page, change the “Sort by” dropdown menu.

  • Sort by Date (Newest) if you are tracking a rapidly changing market trend.

  • Sort by Downloads (Highest) if you want to find the most influential, widely cited foundational papers on a business theory.

4.Download the Pre-print PDF: Step 4.

Click on the paper’s title. Look for the button that says “Download This Paper”. Because SSRN hosts pre-prints (papers undergoing peer-review) and open working papers, you will almost always get immediate, unrestricted access to the full document.

Finding and Borrowing Modern Textbooks

Many books still protected by copyright are available via Controlled Digital Lending. This means you can borrow a digital copy just like a physical library book.

1.Create a Free Account: Step 1.

Go to archive.org (See button bellow this guide) and sign up for a free account. You cannot borrow or view modern books without being logged in.

2.Filter for Borrowable Books: Step 2.

Use the main search bar to look up your topic or textbook title. On the search results page, look at the left sidebar and check the box for “Books to Borrow”. This filters out audio or web archives and focuses strictly on readable books.

3.Understand the Loan Models: Step 3.

When you click on a book, you will see a blue button at the top:

  • Borrow for 1 Hour: If the library only owns one physical copy, you can borrow it for an hour at a time. You can renew this instantly if no one else is waiting.

  • Borrow for 14 Days: If multiple copies are available, you can opt for a two-week loan.

  • Join Waitlist: If the book is currently checked out, click this to be notified by email when it becomes available.

4.Choose Your Reading Method: Step 4.

  • In-Browser: Read immediately using the built-in BookReader interface (no software needed).
